Well, just some of the events that have happened in real life worth mentioning.
Please add on to this.
Johnny Carson has died.
A Tsunami in the Indian ocean caused 300 hundred thousand deaths along the Indian coast.
University of Maryland sweeped Duke
The government is trying to bring Hubble down
Gran Turismo 4 finally came out after being postponed like 20 times
Iraq (must I say more?)
Cassini got in orbit around Saturn, and Huygens succeeded on Titan
Gas prices
Washington D.C. got a baseball team
Hockey season canceled (to some people, )
Mountain Dew Live Wire came back
The earth's core is becoming unstable and could explode during 2005
The above statement is not likely to happen

Or because there weren't any strings to pull on them because they don't have an established global trade network (or atleast a supportive economy). When an abusive leader is in place and you can't pull strings to get them out, you have to do it by force.

Why'd they only do it in Iraq then? There are lots of other "abusive leaders" in the world. Maybe because they don't have oil?
